John Ehlers' Fisher Transform applies a mathematical transform that reshapes price data into an approximately Gaussian distribution. Why bother? Because in a Gaussian world, extremes are rare and sharp — so market turning points, which are muddy on a normal chart, become unmistakable spikes.

How It Works

  • Price position within its recent range is normalized to ±1, then Fisher-transformed.
  • The transform stretches the extremes: readings beyond ±2 are statistically dramatic.
  • A one-bar-delayed trigger line provides crisp crossover signals.

How to Trade It

Two patterns dominate: fade extreme spikes beyond ±2 back toward the mean (with a trend filter), or trade the Fisher/trigger crossover as an early momentum turn. The sharpness that makes it attractive also makes it eager — confirm with structure before acting.

Building It in Setup.Cash

Add Fisher Transform in the strategy builder — the length input controls its sensitivity — and use its value in any entry, exit, or filter condition. You can also combine it with other tools in the Indicators Lab or via the AI indicator generator. See the Inverse relationship with Stochastic — Fisher is essentially a sharpened stochastic. For the full category overview, see the advanced momentum library guide.

Momentum signals are timing tools — combine them with a trend or regime filter and backtest the exact rules before going live.
