Stephen Klinger designed the Klinger Volume Oscillator (KVO) to do two hard things at once: confirm long-term money flow trends and catch short-term reversals early. It converts volume into signed 'volume force' based on trend, range, and accumulation, then takes fast-minus-slow EMAs of that force.

How It Works

  • Volume force: volume signed by trend direction and scaled by range dynamics.
  • KVO = EMA(34) subtracted from EMA(55) of the force... crossed with a 13-EMA signal line.
  • Zero-line position reads the campaign; signal crosses read the skirmishes.

How to Trade It

Trade signal-line crosses that agree with the higher-timeframe trend, and respect divergences: price at new highs with KVO's peaks declining is distribution with a timestamp. The zero cross confirms when a money-flow regime has actually flipped.

Building It in Setup.Cash

Add Klinger Volume Oscillator (KVO) in the strategy builder — the length input controls its sensitivity — and use its value in any entry, exit, or filter condition. You can also combine it with other tools in the Indicators Lab or via the AI indicator generator. See A/D and ADOSC for the close-location school. For the full category overview, see the volume indicators library guide.
