Price Volume Rank (PVR) compresses each bar into one of four states: price up or down × volume up or down. The old tape-reading grammar — 'up on rising volume is healthy, up on falling volume is suspect' — becomes a categorical series your rules can match directly.

How It Works

  • Rank 1: price up, volume up (healthy advance).
  • Rank 2: price up, volume down (suspect advance).
  • Ranks 3–4 mirror for declines — informative vs exhausted selling.

How to Trade It

Count states over a window: advances dominated by rank-1 bars deserve trend-following; rank-2-heavy rallies invite fading. Sequences matter too — a string of rank 4 (down, volume drying up) into support is the classic seller-exhaustion setup.

Building It in Setup.Cash

Add Price Volume Rank (PVR) in the strategy builder — the length input controls its sensitivity — and use its value in any entry, exit, or filter condition. You can also combine it with other tools in the Indicators Lab or via the AI indicator generator. See Volume MA & RVOL for the participation baseline. For the full category overview, see the volume indicators library guide.

Volume tools need volume data, so they shine on crypto and stocks. Backtest on the exact symbols and feed you plan to trade.
