Bill Williams' Awesome Oscillator (AO) is a 5-period SMA minus a 34-period SMA — computed on bar midpoints rather than closes. The histogram shows whether recent market drive is accelerating or fading relative to the bigger wave.

How It Works

  • SMA(5) − SMA(34) of (high+low)/2, plotted as a histogram.
  • Green/red bars show whether momentum grew or shrank vs the prior bar.
  • Midpoint pricing filters the close-print noise other oscillators inherit.

How to Trade It

Three classic Williams signals: the zero cross (simple regime flip), the saucer (three-bar dip-and-resume pattern above zero — a momentum pullback entry), and twin peaks (double bottom below zero with the second peak higher — a reversal setup). All three are mechanical enough to automate directly.

Building It in Setup.Cash

Add Awesome Oscillator in the strategy builder — the length input controls its sensitivity — and use its value in any entry, exit, or filter condition. You can also combine it with other tools in the Indicators Lab or via the AI indicator generator. AO is the momentum leg of the Williams trio with the Alligator and Fractals. For the full category overview, see the advanced momentum library guide.

Momentum signals are timing tools — combine them with a trend or regime filter and backtest the exact rules before going live.
